Welcome to my Practice Coaching page. I’ve been teaching the violin and viola for nearly twenty years. As an active performer within classical, experimental, popular, and folk music practices, I offer guidance across a broad spectrum of musical interests.
Why “practice coaching” ?
One of my favorite elements of being a musician is practicing. After over 30 years of playing the violin, I’ve come to treasure the time I get to myself, to process the music I’m working on. It has taken a long time to get to this point. Practicing was not always enjoyable or easy to do. I think one of the hardest challenges musicians face is figuring out how to practice well.
Recently, I’ve started coaching other musicians on developing their own practice regime. Much of the work involves slowing down, calming down, and cultivating physical, mental, and emotional comfort with playing ones’ own instrument.
My main objective as your practice coach is to provide a safe and nurturing environment for your growth as a musician. Playing the viola or the violin presents an array of challenges to explore, whether postural, technical, or musical. I focus on practice methods and tangible technical advice in order to develop and deepen musical understanding. I have worked extensively with the Alexander Technique, a mind/body awareness method, and will often use aspects in my own teaching to encourage less tension, develop mental focus, and enhance performance experience. I am passionate about the art of interpretation and enjoy working with individuals’ interests to further their own unique expression.
These coachings are available to any student over the age of eight who is serious about their musical studies and practices regularly. They can function as a primary source of learning or can work in tandem with another teacher’s instruction (with the primary teacher’s blessing).
